Lisbon ON THE ROUTES OF THE VIKINGS

Discover the FASCINATING HISTORY OF LISBON on a JOURNEY ALONG THE ROUTES OF THE VIKINGS.  The presence of these “warriors from the sea” was a constant throughout for more than 200 years, between the 9th and 11th centuries within the territories that later turned to Portugal.  In 844 the Vikings attacked Lisbon with a fleet of 80 “drakkars” and again 14 years later, but this time with a fleet led perhaps by two of the most famous of all Viking leaders – Björn and Hastein (Ragnar Lodbrok’s child). In 1147, during the Second Crusade, the first King of Portugal reached an agreement with a group of foreign soldiers to assist him in the siege of Lisbon: among them was a group of Anglo-Normans, descendants of Nordic seamen.
The Vikings, as well as the Portuguese navigators, also ventured into unknown seas in campaigns of discovery and mission , where Nordic features may have been left in the traditional Portuguese vessels.

We follow in the footsteps of the Vikings within the old town and walk around the old
medieval city wall in ALFAMA. Then we continue to the BELEM Quarter, where we visit the MARITIME MUSEUM, which is more than 150 years old , and see the development of the Portuguese shipbuilding
industry, through different models of ships, as well as scientific instruments that allowed these
journeys at the time of the Discoveries.
